Polignano a Mare raises around the fourth century BC, at the initiative of Dionysius, tyrant of Syracuse, to make it safe navigation to the Ionian Sea. Thriving commercial center since the Roman age, as transit of goods and people directed to the East, today the touristic city of Polignano is characterized by its high cliffs overlooking the sea and it hosts the statue of the well-known italian singer Domenico Modugno, famous all over the world for his song “Nel blu dipinto di blu (Volare)”.
